Members and guests of NWCPEA attended a celebration dinner at the Midland Hotel in Manchester with over 40 guests. Chris Murphy (Chair) outlined the history of the association and the significant contribution that so many members have made over the last century. We then celebrated the award winners for the ‘Gill Parry Best Practice in Physical Education Awards’, which went to the PE Teams at Baxenden St John’s CE Primary School, Accrington; Bank View School, Liverpool; Wright Robinson College Manchester and Jo Price from High Legh Primary School, Cheshire. The ‘Eric Ward Prize’ for outstanding student research went to Callum Lindley from Edge Hill University. Kate Thornton-Bousfield provided a speech that highlighted the importance of afPE, YST and all other PE organisations working together to improve the experiences of children in school PE, after school and community physical activities. The President, Dave Kellett, shared a personal reflection of his many years of working for NWCPEA and the significant contributions from many colleagues such as Ken Hardman, Kevin Hardman, Eric Ward, Trefor Jones and many others. Dave also highlighted the importance of the establishment of the European PE Review, which is one of the highest ranked PE Journals in the world and has been carefully edited by Ken Green and more recently Nollaig McEvilly. A truly social occasion allowed guests to enjoy each others company and share experiences whilst reminiscing. Many thanks to Rita Hesford for her excellent organisation of the event. NWCPEA looks forward to its next event which will be the European Schools Sports Day on Friday 26th September in Manchester. On this day children from all over Europe will aim to engage in at least two hours of physical activity. As an association, we look forward to the next 100 years of supporting PE teachers from the North West of England, as well as contributing to the European Physical Education Association’s (EUPEA)
work in Europe.
